“The impact of the building doesn’t just stop at the edge of the outside walls, it needs to interact with the neighborhood it’s in, and provide clear instructions for people on how they can use the space.”

Jessica Jobe Sea never imagined she’d design a lab to accommodate cadaver heads in buckets. But on a renovation project at UCSF, that’s what she did. She added window film to the neuroscientist’s lab to appease his colleagues, who weren’t big fans of the heads.

Her year abroad in Denmark inspired her communal approach to design. She views creativity as a team sport. She also appreciates the Danes’ longer view of what it means to be sustainable. “There’s a responsibility to design something that fits with the community so that it will stick around,” she says.

Jessica likes to get the perspective of people outside the industry – they challenge her to look at things in a different way. It makes her happy to gather family and friends to enjoy good food together. When she’s not eating, she likes to go on long runs to clear her head, coming back both tired and refreshed. She hopes to keep running long into the future.
