“Just because you like LEGOs and build a cardboard castle as a kid doesn’t mean you’re going to be an architect… although I guess it did for me.”

Gavin sees architecture as puzzle – and problem-solving at its finest. He likes to sketch on paper to keep his ideas loose and fresh. After sketching, he’ll use a computer for scale and to apply the limits of reality. Computers are good at certain things, but he doesn’t ever like to put the pencil away.

A long-distance bicyclist, Gavin explores the world on two wheels. “I get into a different mode when I’m on long bike tours,” he says. “The speed is so much slower, you experience the journey and the sights.” He has a dream of taking his two young children biking cross country, but he’s still waiting for them to graduate from the balance bikes.

It’s no surprise that Gavin is committed to sustainable design. He wants to push the envelope towards living buildings and innovative materials in every project he works on. It’s just another puzzle for him to solve.
