“It’s a different mindset or philosophy about healthcare, one that is being embraced.”
Terri Sudbrook thinks it’s vitally important that people feel calm and welcomed. Probably because she has specialized in designing for healthcare since 2001.
For her, good architecture creates a sense of empathy and compassion. Her viewpoint on this crystalized after she experienced imaging suites firsthand prior to a shoulder operation. The rooms were too clinical, too stark, too cold – in temperature and in color. Successful healthcare design comes from feeling what patients feel; seeing how clinicians interact with the space. It should be a safe place for the community. It’s a philosophy she realized with her work on The Women’s Center at Kaiser Union City. It’s designed to put you at ease.
Terri is constantly in a learning or teaching mode, attending two conferences each year for knowledge and inspiration. She is president of the Santa Clara Valley Chapter of CSI (Construction Specifications Institute). She is inclined to explain why before you ask why. If you’re a client, that’s part of the “put people at ease” mindset.
When asked what she would do if not in architecture, she said she’d fly a helicopter.
