The Bancroft Library Renovation

Bringing UC Berkeley’s rare book collection to light

The Bancroft Library Seismic and Programmatic Improvements $42 million in upgrades transformed UC Berkeley’s Bancroft Library, home to the University’s renowned rare book and manuscript collections. The six-story, 129,500 SF facility received seismic strengthening and a full reorganization of departments and specialized storage to meet future needs. Workshops with University stakeholders shaped solutions that balance access, visibility, and preservation while integrating modern systems into a historic academic setting. Noll & Tam collaborated with Ratcliff on this complex project.

“The design magnificently presents the dignity of the Bancroft Library, transforming it into the Special Collections Library it was always meant to be.”
