Oakland Children's Zoo
Oakland, California
The Children's Zoo is the final element of the dramatic revitalization that the Oakland Zoo has been undergoing for over a decade. Noll & Tam Architects is working with MIG, the master planner and landscape architect, to create new designs that combine an eclectic animal collection with interactive children's play in a series of settings based on animal behaviors and adaptations. Noll & Tam Architects, whose long-standing association with the zoo has included the Administration Building and the Entrance Building, is performing full design services for several structures within the children's exhibits: the Bat House, the Reptile House, the Goat Barn/kitchen/staff lounge, the Pig Barn, the Poultry Visitor Barn, the Insect Building, and a restroom. We are also designing a structure for the amphitheater/stage and a typical picnic shelter. The goal of the Children's Zoo and its exhibits is to help children develop empathy for and understanding of the natural world.
