The Marine Mammal Center, National Parks Service Golden Gate National Recreation Area
Marin Headlands, California
Noll & Tam Architects in association with Scott Dennis Architect designed The Marine Mammal Rescue Center, a non-profit research teaching and rescue hospital that rescues and rehabilitates over 600 animals annually. Located on a former Nike missile silo site in Fort Cronkhite, the program includes a Research Laboratory, Veterinary Sciences Functions, Animal Food Preparation, Outreach Classroom, Interpretive Exhibits, Retail and Administrative . The outdoor program includes more than 30 shaded pools, animal holding pens, triage areas and education program areas. The corporation yard and an existing silo accommodate the Life Support Systems necessary for re-cycling the 250,000 gallons of water used in the pools. The environmental mission of the Center inspired sustainable design ideas including the adaptive re-use of existing structures, modernized water-reclamation systems, photovoltaic solar panel shade structures, radiant floors, and natural ventilation.
