San Lorenzo Library
San Lorenzo, CA
Noll & Tam recently completed the design for a new 37,000-square foot library as part of the Alameda County Library System. As an integral part of a large redevelopment plan, the library will act as the focal point of a new civic plaza along Hesperian Boulevard. The design features large walls of glass and stone with tall roof lines providing a prominent public face. A sweeping outdoor amphitheater leads to a clear, spacious entry galleria which will provide a multi functional space outside the library proper for public use. This space is envisioned as a glowing beacon at night and will portray a feeling of openness and transparency. The interior of the library is characterized by the central reading hall which acts as the main axis of circulation for the library. The library will feature a fully automated sorting system, a glass entry galleria, and a partially underground, 130 space parking garage. To meet Alameda Counties mandate to encourage sustainable design, Noll & Tam participated in an extensive charrete process with various consultants, county staff, and maintenance personnel to establish strategies to meet a Gold LEED rating.
