Morgan Hill Library
Morgan Hill, CA

Noll & Tam Architects is providing architectural services for the City of Morgan Hill's new library, a 40,000-square-foot facility that would replace the existing 16,000-square-foot, 1970s-era building. We started with a master planning exercise to locate the new library in the Civic Center complex while accommodating the City Hall expansion and a new structure for the Council Chambers. The key feature in the site planning was a new Civic Green, circular in form and with an existing natural spring as its focal point, which permits access to the new building via gently sloping ramps. Using a visioning workshop, we achieved consensus on scaling the library to complement the surrounding residential neighborhoods and using materials that reflect the setting. The main reading room is framed with a series of graceful trusses and is lit by tall window bays and skylights. Connecting the interior and exterior environments, the view from this room is of El Toro Mountain, which forms a dramatic backdrop for the site.
