Freedom Branch Library
Watsonville, CA
Noll & Tam Architects designed the transformation of a 3,800-square-foot, 1950s-era fire station into the new Freedom Branch Library, one of two libraries that serve the City of Watsonville. We programmed and designed the facility to include public spaces for reader seating, study rooms, a computer lab, public restrooms, a circulation desk, book stacks, a staff workroom/kitchenette, and a children's reading room. The former fire-truck doors, now windows, look out over a tranquil landscape that includes a seat wall, colorful planting, and outdoor reading rooms. As a separate project, we designed space for a homework center/meeting room, police satellite office and restroom in an adjacent building. A successful example of adaptive reuse, the Freedom Branch Library draws the community in with its new look and function.
