Castro Valley Library
Castro Valley, CA

A light-filled and modern facility, the Castro Valley Library is a successful example of beautiful, functional design on a limited budget. Situated in a redevelopment zone, the library will be the heart of a mixed-use collection of housing, commercial, and civic buildings. This 34,000-square-foot community focal point will offer unique spaces for all ages, as well as a flexible design that accommodates a variety of community needs. Pre-school-aged children, teens, and seniors all have their own reading/study areas, while a Friends of the Library bookstore and café will offer a sophisticated way to enjoy a good read. After-hours community meetings can be accommodated in the meeting room off the lobby. With state-of-the-art self-service technologies, staff will be free to roam and help patrons at the service nexuses or in the collections. Abundant natural light and an efficient heating and ventilation system contribute to the building's LEED Silver rating, while bioswales will capture rainwater and runoff in the parking lot and trees will provide shade in the hot climate. The stucco, steel, and glass structure will create an eloquent yet civic profile in the community.
