The Doe Library Annex, Bancroft Library
University of California, Berkeley

Noll & Tam is currently the Associate Architect with Ratcliff (Prime Architect) for the seismic and programmatic improvements of The Bancroft Library that houses the rare book and manuscript collections of UC Berkeley. The scope of work includes a seismic upgrade as well as a complete gutting of the building's interior in order to redesign interior spaces to meet current and projected needs. The main goals of the design were to improve the visibility of this amazing rare collection of materials, reorganize all Bancroft Library departments and establish a new interior connection to the Main Doe Library. The design includes special accommodations for the library's Egyptian papyri collection, the Mark Twain Papers, and other valuable documents, as well as increased space to display selected pieces of the collection. The design of the public spaces include an exhibit gallery, the rare book reading room, four seminar rooms, and a ceremonial entry.
