Center for the Study of Plant Conservation
Botanical Gardens, University of California, Berkeley, California
Noll & Tam Architects oversaw the transformation of an existing hazardous materials facility into a laboratory to be used in the study of integrative biology. Located at the University's botanical gardens, the new 4,000-square-foot laboratory includes a wet lab, laboratory support areas, a soils lab, and supporting office and meeting spaces. Because of its remote location, the building needed to supply all necessary infrastructure typical of a larger laboratory facility, including purified water, gas, vacuum, electrical and telecommunication systems. Noll & Tam conducted an assessment of the existing structure, designed the interiors, and conducted a solar analysis adjacent to the lab for a future greenhouse.
