Cesar Chavez Student Center
University of California, Berkeley

The Cesar E. Chavez Student Center is a dynamic, 74,000-square-foot concrete building originally constructed in 1959 as a cafeteria in the new student union complex at Sproul Plaza. Now housing diverse student-service organizations and administrative departments, the building was in need of improved internal space planning, a better sense of entry, and a more logical internal organization to give user groups an enhanced sense of identity. Noll & Tam's design features a new main entrance lobby and graphic signage system, clarifying circulation throughout the building. We also made significant alterations to the building's mechanical systems to improve air quality and developed an innovative plan to improve its seismic performance, as well as renovating the electrical and elevator systems.
