Hearst Gymnasium Pool

Reviving a Julia Morgan jewel at UC Berkeley

The 1927 Phoebe Hearst Women’s Gymnasium, constructed of reinforced concrete in a Beaux-Arts style, was designed by Julia Morgan and Bernard Maybeck. Noll & Tam Architects investigated the serious deterioration of the marble decks, deck membrane and structural concrete around three pools and produced structural and architectural recommendations for their rehabilitation. The investigation included extensive materials testing, detailed structural surveys, a study of the pool systems, and research into the original marble and the proposed replacement materials. All new work closely matched the original design and followed the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties.
